Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
